Double T. Inc. has been open for business since 1996. Their inspiration came from the need for a new rain gutter on their home. They bought a rain gutter machine and the business evolved from a home workshop into a couple of warehouses and 20 employees. They are a family owned and operated business. Double T. Inc. specializes in window and home exterior improvements. They replace siding, rain gutters and windows.
In the beginning, the hardest things were getting the building permits and moving from their home workshop to a larger location. Being a business owner in 2017 has its challenges. One of the toughest things, business owner Tracy shared is having to pay taxes. “Paying taxes makes it harder to grow,” she mentioned.
Having been around for 21 years now, Tracy feels that because of their history customers are more likely to choose them over their competitors. They are not the cheapest the the industry but they take pride in their quality work and in their quality employees. Their employees are trained to certain expectations and because of this the job gets done the right way the first time.

Jim Hall has been in the window business for 25 years. Jim was working for another company when he realized he was doing everything an owner did, after this realization he started Accent Windows. He was also aware of the hours he would have to put in as a business owner and knew in the long run, it would be worth it. Starting his own business has been a great learning experience for Jim. He wears a lot of hats as the owner and mentioned that there is not really an off switch as owner. Jim is constantly in work mode, taking as much work as he and his crew can handle. It has stretched him but has made Accent Windows what it is today.
With the internet becoming more prevalent, Accent Windows has had to adjust their marketing and advertising to current times. In the last 5 years, they have made a huge transition from phone books to internet. They used to get a lot of business from their listings in phone books which generally brought in customers with older homes, who needed replacement windows.
Being a business owner in 2017 comes with its challenges. But Jim said, “we are exceptionally fortunate this year as we are already ahead of last year.” Jim believes in taking care of his 5 man team and his customers. Accent windows is doing their best to provide personalized service to their customers. Jim says, “we take care of people first hand, everything has our personal touch from start to finish.” At Accent Windows their team gets things get done the right way which gives them a great track record.
In the future, Jim would like to see his team as busy as they are right now. As owner, Jim enjoys being involved from start to finish. Jim would eventually like to step back from wearing so many hats but it’s important to him that customers know who he is as owner, and he believes strongly in taking care of his customers. Solar Window and Door has been around since 1940. Andrew took over as the owner of Solar Window and Door in 1991 and has been working in the industry for 41 years. He saw a good opportunity to own his own business and decided he’d rather do it for himself rather than someone else.
The most difficult part to taking over Solar Window and Door was getting the right people in the right places. Andrew said, “it was hard to let old employees go but it was necessary.” Being a business owner in 2017 has it challenges. The hardest part for Solar Window and Door is finding good employees.
The service industry in general may hire youngsters who need a summer job or a short term job, but today most youngsters are pushed towards college instead of manual work. Andrew said, “It’s hard to find loyal, good employees who will stick around and retire with me, but I’ve done it! I don’t have a high turn over.”
They currently have 6 employees on their team and Andrew does his best to take care of his employees by treating them well. If they need help with a job, Andrew has contacts with contractors to help out with really big jobs.
Customers have told Andrew that they feel comfortable with Solar Window and Door. Andrew does most of the outside sales himself and enjoys what he does. He enjoys getting out, working with others, and seeing projects especially the challenging projects. As a salesman, he feels it’s important to not be pushy but he tries to educate his customers.
He finds it very important that a customers’ questions are answered which requires a lot of knowledge of product specifics and codes. “We sell a good quality product, our products are good in value, our prices are fair, and we do it right,” Andrew stated.

GSL Electric, LLC
I had the opportunity to speak to the CEO of GSL Electric to find out more about his company. His name is Lance Capell, and he was more than happy to answer a few questions.
GSL Electric opened their doors to the public in 1981 and have two locations. One here in Utah and the other in Las Vegas. Three partners started here in Salt Lake City first.
Their scope of work is mainly in the commercial and industrial electrical arena and they do many different kinds of installation such as engineering and design/build , low voltage systems and many other large scale tasks.
GSL’s goals for the future have much to do with their employees. They are a 100% employee owned company and plan on staying committed to keep up with the ebb and flow of the market space. Their employee's happiness and overall well-being is their first priority when asked about GSL's future goals.
I also had the opportunity to speak to GSL's president, Tom Ewing; who was in Las Vegas. It seemed that most of the work that GSL does is with contractors and businesses that have worked together for many years. Even though most of their on-going business is with individuals that know them and their lasting reputation, they understand that opportunity can come from many places.
