Utah Division Of Air Quality Approves Plans To Build A Plant That Will Convert Coal To Liquid!1/11/2016 That's right, you read the title correctly! The Utah Division Of Air Quality (DAQ) is approving plans for Revolution Fuels to open up a coal to liquid operation power plant in Wellington, Utah. Despite the increased restrictions the Obama Administration has enforced regarding coal and other similar plants cutting their carbon dioxide (C02) emissions by 30% by the year 2030.
Apparently the DAQ believes they have some time to squander prior to 2030 (14 years) before they have to meet the standards. Their main argument is that although they are still emitting dangerous levels of emissions, they are not emitting as much C02 as other primitive coal plants are. The other reason they are doing this is because they actually do not have to follow the 2030 regulation in that they are not under the category of a coal fired power plant and a coal to liquid plant is therefore exempt. Salt Lake City Review apologizes for the purposeful misdirecting of their readers in leading you to believe that the coal to liquid plant Proposed in Wellington, Utah had to follow Obama's "Clean Power Plan". We figured it was worth it to raise an immediate emotion but to then immediately notify you that this is why the DAQ feels justified in their action. So what would a coal to liquid plant do for the local economy of Wellington, Utah? Besides the obvious as far as providing jobs for the locals and nearby towns, what are the short or long term consequences of emitting a calculated 300,000 tons/year of C02 into Utah's atmosphere? Not to mention the 80+ tons of carbon monoxide, and 20+ tons of particulate matter 2.5 besides the carbon dioxide previously mentioned. Will a coal to liquid plant help boost local commerce of hinder it? There really are many unanswered questions that are argued on both sides of the fence! Feel free to chime in and leave a comment of your own on this particular issue. Salt Lake City Review always welcomes any opinion so long as that opinion is either fact based and never attacks a human being but rather challenges the thought process to hopefully produce newer schools of thought!
